RE: Assignment by Joyce Johnson

Usually, when I think of someone “weird” is usually when they act questionable, as in something you wouldn’t usually hear someone say. A lot of the thine, though, many people like to call others “crazy” or “weird” when they act different than them, dress different, or like to be someone who sticks out. Sticking out should not be something to call someone weird or crazy over, as everyone’s different and we all deserve to be original in our own way. Many people like to base oddness based on how different they are from the person judging, and that regards color, race, shape, size and personality.

(H) Police Amounts of Force

I have one hundred percent support of the government hiring people to protect our citizens. What I don’t support, is an unnecessary amount of forced used by police officers on citizens that don’t deserve it.

Police force seems to be a touchy subject lately, with many cases of police officers unfairly and unnecessarily killing or brutally abusing citizens that are most of the time not guilty at all, or haven’t done anything to pose a threat towards the police officers on the scene. In Hunt’s article, “it’s not done on the street the way its taught in the academy” is sheer proof that police officers sometimes like to change the right ways to handle problems, and often like to take advantage of their title.

Sadly, there’s a big pattern of white/caucasian officers abusing and/or killing dark skinned or black people for little to no reason at all. It’s sad to say that I have experienced one of these problems with one of my family members. My step mom was driving my birth mom’s car, to which they got pulled over by this caucasian male officer, and he continued to ask my step mom (who is black) out of the car for questioning, for only the offense of the car registration being expired. The officer then decided to ask my step mom to the back of the car, where it was difficult to see what was going on. He began accusing her of stealing the car, because it was actually registered under my birth mom’s name, and she was not the one driving it. My birth mom then got angry and suspicious as the began to voice record the conversation with her phone, and the cops saw her phone and abruptly stopped all questioning and almost left the scene immediately.

Therefore, I know that there are real officers out there that actually want everything to do with the safety of people, rather than others who choose to provoke more hate and crime out in the world while taking advantage of their title as “peacekeepers.”

(H) On Being Sane in Insane Places

When it comes to illnesses, especially mental illnesses, I’m not sure how the doctors can diagnose a person when there’s no blood work, no visible signs of the illness. It’s a bit difficult when you just go by the characteristics of the person to diagnose them with a crippling mental illness. Some, however, you can definitely know for a fact that they have a mental illness by the way they end up over time.

To go deeper into this, both my grandma and my grandpa has mental illnesses near the end of their life. My grandma had obvious signs of schizophrenia, she was always paranoid someone was out to get her, she had crazy anger issues, and bipolar tendencies, and it was very difficult to watch. My grandpa, whom I’ve lost only a couple months ago, had dementia. He came to live with us at the beginning of last year I could say, he was only 68 years old, and by the time he got near his birthday of last year, in August, he no longer showed any signs of living, except eternal sleep. earlier in the year he forgot small things, like the date or where he put his phone, small things. It eventually grew to things such as forgetting our names, not knowing where he is, locking himself inside a room and not realizing how to unlock the door (when the lock is inside with him). It was a very tough thing to see, and I could only imagine how hard it was for him. There would be days he would cry and tell us that he knows what he’s going through, and he wishes it had never happened to him. In a way, I’m kind of glad he passed, so that he can finally let his mind be at ease, he can finally be at peace, and he doesn’t have to worry about anything anymore.

Therefore, I hope doctors can diagnose someone who is actually in need of a diagnosis, so they can prepare for the types of things they would have to go through. Those mental illnesses are not easy, no one would want to have them, so the best we can do is just try and stay healthy and try our best to prepare for the bed things that are coming to us, if they are.

(H) The Pathology of Imprisonment

Personally, I feel as though prisoners, regardless of their crime, should be treated like humans. For the most part, I humbly believe that the reason most criminals act the way they do is because of their mental state, their health, their own well being, or some other reason. But, there is always a reason. For some, when they get mad they like to partake in activities that calm them down, and for others, the criminals, it involves killing or very badly hurting the person that angered them. Although, I do not think that criminals should be allowed to do what they do, nor do I feel like they’re accepted for the things they’ve done, I just believe that every human is a human. If one of these people did harm to someone I know and love, I feel as though the government should give the right punishment (for the most part), but frankly they don’t, and that’s saddening.

In terms of the Zimbardo study, I took a psychology class last semester, and this topic was a very big one. We actually watched a video on either this exact study or one just like it, and it was amazing to watch innocent, generally nice people, turn into a whole new person either being a prison guard, or a prisoner. It doesn’t quite amaze me how people begin to act even when they are given even the smallest amount of power, they tend to take advantage of it. there have been many instances in my life where I have witnessed someone taking advantage of power and I have been someone affected by it. It changes the person abusing the power, and the person feeling the affects of that abused power. When it comes to the people who volunteered to be apart of this study, the guards that they were acting as, mostly came back as mean aggressive people, and the people who were the prisoners came back almost damaged, they seemed like they had some kind of PTSD over what they experienced. But to conclude my thoughts, prisoners should be treated like humans nonetheless of their crimes, and guards should stop acting like they own everything and can abuse anyone they want, because most criminals probably get released in resentment of the people who have abused them, and that almost fuels their next crime, if they commit one.

(H) Eating Your Friends is the Hardest

In my opinion, I think that eating any human would be very hard. By Henslin’s story, it seemed very difficult for the plane crash survivors to muster up the courage to even try and eat someone. Obviously, cannibalism is completely frowned upon, but for some reason, it’s only illegal in Idaho. But the good thing is that murder is illegal and that’s technically what would happen if you ate someone, they would have to be dead or killed beforehand.

In terms of the story, if I were in that situation, I would probably want to be one of the people who tried to hold out the longest, but I would eventually cave in and have to for my own safety. But if were talking technically, I would most likely die before anyone would but not because of starvation, dehydration, or hypothermia, it would be because I’m a Type 1 Diabetic, and I would be without insulin, the medicine that keeps me alive. But in the sake that I’m not diabetic in this situation, I would be just like everyone else, even though I am completely against it otherwise. I feel as though its completely disrespectful of someone’s body to eat them, but I guess if you put it in the sense that there “is no soul left” in the body then I guess it would be logical, to stay alive.
